Hot Dogs in a Heatwave – 5 Ways we keep cool on the Farm

As summer settles in and the days grow longer and warmer, we find ourselves adapting our routines – not just for ourselves, but for our dogs too. Here on the farm, we know just how sensitive our four-legged companions can be to the heat, each with their own unique ways of coping.
Beans, our amazing French Bulldog, loves a gentle splash in the paddling pool but needs careful monitoring as the temperature rises. Basil, our curious Whippet puppy, hasn’t quite learned his limits yet and requires a little extra guidance to stay safe, after a morning zoomies with the cats. And Waffle, our gentle, long-haired rescue, wisely retreats to the cool tiles in the boot room when the sun is high.
Just as we create spaces for shade and quiet across the farm, we’ve found a few thoughtful ways to keep our dogs comfortable during the warmest weeks. These five tips are simple to try at home and make all the difference when it comes to keeping our pups happy, hydrated, and healthy in the summer heat.
EARLY BIRD BREAKFASTS AND LATE NIGHT WALKS
On hotter days, we shift feeding times to early morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Not only does this make meal time more comfortable, but it also mimics more natural rhythms for digestion. Likewise, walks are best done when the pavement isn’t sizzling – if you can’t hold your hand on the tarmac for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for their paws!
HYDRATION STATIONS AND ICE TREATS
Fresh, cool water is a must – we dot multiple bowls around shady spots, and always keep bottles in the fridge to top up. Want to go next level? Freeze a few Herbie Wilde biscuits with some peanut butter, berries and a splash of water into ice cube trays. Think of it as a doggy Fab lolly – only healthier!
SHADY BUSINESS AND COOL MATS
At the farm, we’ve got shaded dens, tree canopies, and cooling mats laid out like tiny spa lounges for our dogs. At home, a wet towel on the floor, a fan nearby or making cool shaded areas in the garden can do wonders. Just make sure they are not panting too much and have access to water and a super cool area inside.

SPLASH ZONES AND PADDLING FUN
Nothing says summer like a splash about. We have a paddling pool under the oak tree where Bertie leads the dive-in crew. No pool? A shallow washing-up tub with some floating toys will make for a mini water park in your back garden. If the temperature drops to below 23 degrees we always walk the gang in the woodland here and by the river, to have easy easy to keep them cool!
MENTAL GAMES NOT CHASE GAMES
In high heat, active play can be too much. Instead, we hide Herbie Wilde nibbles around the house and cool outbuildings for treasure-hunting fun. It keeps minds busy and tails wagging.
KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE
Heatstroke can sneak up fast. Watch for excessive panting, drooling, confusion, or vomiting. If you spot any of these signs, move your dog to a cool space, wet them with room temperature water (not ice cold), and call your vet. Prevention is the best medicine – so if in doubt, skip the walk and make a game of it indoors.
Because every day should be a tail-wagging one – even when the sun’s blazing. Let us know how you’re keeping your pup cool, and tag us in your paddling pool pics for a chance to be featured!
Stay chill,
The Herbie Wilde Team
